"This is the night when Christ broke the prison-bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld." (Exsultet)
A liturgy of liturgies, it begins at 8PM with the blessing of the new fire, in front of the church on Madison Ave. followed by the blessing of the Paschal (Easter) Candle.
Several readings from the Hebrew Scriptures are proclaimed. In these we are reminded of God’s creation of the world, God’s great faithfulness to the Israelites, the gift of the God’s grace represented by flowing water and abundant life. In the Letter to the Romans we hear how we have been born to new life in Christ.
It is a night for making all things new: fire, light, water, lives.
